ὑπό-κρισις, -εως, ἡ

(ὑποκρίνομαι, which see) [in LXX: 2Ma.6.25 * ;]

1. a reply, answer (Hdt.).

2. play-acting (Arist., Polyb., al.). Metaphorical, pretence, hypocrisy: Matthew 23:28, Mark 12:15, Luke 12:1, Galatians 2:13, 1 Timothy 4:2, 1 Peter 2:1 (Polyb., Pss Song of Solomon 4:7).
