Definition

ἀνθ-ίοτημι

(ἀντί, ἵστημι), [in LXX for עָמַד, יָצַב, etc. ;]

1. in pres., impf., fut. and 1 aor. act., causal, to set against.

2. In mid, and pass., also pf. and 2 aor. act., to withstand, resist, oppose: with dative, Matthew 5:39, Luke 21:15, Acts 6:10; 13:8, Romans 9:19; 13:2, Galatians 2:11, Ephesians 6:13, 2 Timothy 3:8; 4:15, James 4:7, 1 Peter 5:9.
